Visual stress is a term used to describe visual discomfort and perceptual distortions in printed text, experienced by some people when reading. The condition is estimated to be present in about 40% of poor readers and in 20% of the general population in varying degrees.
Symptoms may be alleviated or reduced by offering coloured overlays or precision tinted lenses, which may in turn help to improve reading performance and comfort.
Coloured overlays may improve reading speed, accuracy and enable longer periods of reading free of discomfort. They are a good tool to initially investigate if colour might help mitigate symptoms but they are not usually a long-term solution. Overlays are not as convenient as spectacles as they are not suitable for computer or white board work and the range of colours is limited. If the coloured overlay provides benefit, it is an indication that the individual may benefit from Precision Tinted lenses by an assessment with our specialist optometrists, using the Colorimeter.
This allows a much wider exploration of colour space to ensure that you are benefiting from the most precise tint to achieve optimal results. The precision tint will be provided in spectacle or contact lenses and will include a Certificate of Authenticity.
